Chris Coleman Drum Clinic – “It’s gonna be funky…”

You may or may not have heard but on Tuesday November 6th we held “An Evening with Chris Coleman”, a drum clinic with one of the best players on the planet. If you missed it, here’s what went down…

Early October we go word that Chris-Clause was coming to town with our good pals at Sonor Drums, so instead of keeping him to ourselves we decided to put the word out our good friends and customers. For the weeks leading up we got TONS of messages of excitement for Chris’ arrival, even Mr Coleman himself was eager to get over here and do his thaaaaang!

To say Chris can play is an understatement, the man is in a league of his own. Watching him sound check was a masterclass in itself. He’s very particular with how he wanted his drums tuned and with how they would sound through the front of house, which gave an insight into how he achieves his signature sound. He played the wonderful SQ1 kit which out the box sounded amazing, but with a little Coleman flare it sounded perfect.

People fortunate to come along got treated to an opening of Chris playing three tracks with face-melting fills and intricate grooves followed by a lengthy and informative Q&A session. The energy Chris projects on stage truly is infectious, it’s difficult not to get inspired by it! What was really special about Chris’ performance was that it showed no sign of slowing down. He was 100 miles an hour for the full 90 minutes, which kept everyone in attendance on the edge of their seat. He performed his signature routine of splitting the crowd into three sections to create a multitude of cross-rhythms. The difference this time was that he was armed with a bass guitar and got three members of the audience (including our very own Toni) up behind the kit to show us what they got.

He closed his performance with his infamous interpretation of the Kaz Rodriguez track “GO”, cementing himself in the mind of everyone as a legend. He took pictures with everyone and anyone who came to meet him afterwards and gave them all the time in the world. Although Chris Colemans name was on the clinic poster, he made the evening very much about the people who came to see him rather than himself. He brought the energy to the people and they brought it back in their droves. Chris was a joy to watch and work with and I’m quite sure we’d happily work together again in the near future.
